The US is preparing a fresh $2 billion weapons package for Ukraine

According to two US sources informed on the proposal, the US is preparing more than $2 billion in military aid for Ukraine, which will include longer-range rockets for the first time, as well as other munitions and weaponry. Officials suggested on Wednesday that the help might be disclosed as soon as this week. It is also planned to contain Patriot air defence systems support equipment, precision-guided bombs, and Javelin anti-tank weaponry.

One of the insiders claimed that a component of the $1.725 billion package will come from a fund known as the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which permits President Joe Biden's administration to get weapons from industry rather than from US arms inventories.

The USAI funding would be used to acquire a new weapon, the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB), with a range of 150 kilometres (94 miles). The United States has turned down Ukraine's request for the 300-kilometer (185-mile) range ATACMS missile.

The greater range of the GLSDB glide bomb may let Ukraine to hit previously inaccessible targets, allowing it to drive its counterattacks farther behind Russia's lines.
