Russian Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to nine more years.

The court has found out that Navalny is guilty of committing a “large-scale fraud.” Hence, he was sentenced to nine years, and his lawyers were also detained. The judges have also said that he will have to pay a whopping 1.2 million roubles.

He is already serving a two and half year sentence at a prison camp as he is found guilty of parole violations. Navalny is the most prominent face of opposition, and he is an open critique of Putin. Navalny was jailed last year after he returned from receiving medical treatment in Germany; a Soviet-era nerve agent poisoned him during a visit to Siberia in 2020.

He has blamed Putin for this attack, but the Kremlin has denied such claims as there is no evidence that Putin would be involved in the poison attack.

The US state department has “strongly condemned” this act and called Russia’s “orchestration of sham trial” against Navalny.
