David Sassoli President of the European Union dies at the age of 65



Mr Sassoli the former Italian journalist and the president of the EU parliament dies at the age of 65. Mr Sassoli was seriously ill for the last two weeks and was admitted to Italy hospital last month due to complications in his health. The centre-left politician was rushed to hospital in Strasbourg in September for his severe case of Pneumonia.



Despite complications in his health he remotely worked in October and officially resumed his work in November, but again due to continued health deterioration, he was admitted to the Italy hospital in December and died in the early hours of Tuesday.



Mr Sassoli became the President of the parliament of the EU in July 2019 and is deemed as the second Italian president elected by Universal Suffrage. He competed against three candidates for this position and secured a clear victory following his speech. Before holding this position he had a long three-decade career in journalism and in 2009 became a member of the European Parliament[MEP].
