Charanjit Singh, the gold medalist of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, died at his home in Una, Himachal Pradesh on Thursday after a long illness and a heart attack. He was 90 years old. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Charanjit performed brilliantly in the 1960 Olympics. But due to injury, they had to miss the final, and India lost 0-1 to Pakistan. Then in 1964, under the leadership of Charanjit, the Indian team defeated Pakistan 1-0 in the final to win the historic title. He was also part of the Indian team that won a silver medal in the 1962 Asian Games.
After retiring from hockey, he was working as the Director of Physical Education at Himachal Pradesh University.
